28 Jul Pork Week Day 3: How to Prepare for Your Hog
Once you order a pig and select your cuts, what do you need to do to prepare for it's arrival to your home? Read more here for our tips and a great giveaway!!
Once you have found a farmer and pig that you like, there isn’t too much for you as a consumer to do but wait. That is with the exception of making sure you have a freezer to store hog. Vacuum sealed pork should last in a freezer for one year so it is important to have a good freezer to keep it organized and fresh.
The most common question we get is “How much freezer space is needed for a whole or half pig?”
Here is our best recommendation:
Whole Hog– 7 cubic feet, a stand up freezer or chest freezer
Half Hog– 3.5 cubic feet, stand up freezer or bottom freezer/refridgetator
We like this video from Seven Sons, a farm in Southern Indiana. Here they are sharing what is in their quarter pork bundle; but, what is neat is that it gives you a visual of what a quarter pork looks like in terms of packages of meat. A half pig would basically double this and a whole pig would be four times the amount of pork on the table.
To help celebrate Pork Week 2017, anyone who purchases at least a half pig during the 2017 Season is entered to win a small freezer to accommodate their pork!
The winner will be announced prior to their pig being processed so everyone can plan accordingly. Orders and deposits must be received by August 14, 2017 to be eligible. Note: If you have purchased a half pig already and put down your deposit you are entered.
